After a lot of very worried talk in the papers and in resort the snow drought has ended. And in emphatic style. This really is the heaviest fall for along time and the roads up and down the valley have been impassable – the snow ploughs simply can’t clear them quick enough before more snow covers them up again.

Up the mountain the viability has been zero – but to be expected and an inconvenience we’re happy to tolerate… We are expecting almost everything to be open soon and with tis amount of snow Televerbier have plenty of the white stuff to make sure pistes low down (which were grass until three am this morning) are operational.

This winter certainly started late and Verbier – benefitting from altitude and excellent snowmaking facilities – has been host to people travelling from all over Switzerland and France who came as their own destinations were simply unable to open. (And we must admit to being a little smug seeing the visiting ski instructors studying piste maps and attempting to navigate round the resort that we call home. Bless them).

Of course, when it’s freezing and a complete white-out, the only sensible thing to do is pop in and say hi to Claude-Alain at Dahu…

So how much snow is there? Reports vary depending on altitude but looks like there could be accumulations of well over half a meter.

Happy belated Christmas!

Yes, we’ve been allowed up and can confirm the there’s quite a lot of snow and quite a lot of people skiing with smiles on their faces, as well as even more who are falling over a lot.

The Medran lifts to Ruinettes opened at about ten today and although the new exciting Mayentset chair lift isn’t rolling yet. It’s time will come and on days like today it will be epic…

And the great news is that it’s kept snowing all day – with more on Wednesday.

How much is up there? No idea, but it’s well over a meter and they’re bombing the place frantically trying to the top of the mountain secure for next week.

It’s the biggest storm we can remember for years, maybe decades. And the story from Televerbier is that there’s already more snow this winter than the whole of last season…

So far there’s been a good few feet of snow in town, more up top and some terrifying winds. And more is coming tonight.

It’s snowed so much and been so windy Verbier is shut today and could be closed all weekend depending on who you listen to…

It’s all finally happening in Verbier. After a few false starts and couple of powder days it looks like we’re in for another Snowmaggedon (click here for the previous videos) with up to (and possibly more than) a meter coming on Thursday and Friday.

Happy days.

And with news like that it’s easy to overlook a cheeky foot of fresh snow which is about what we had last night.

And luckily for you Laura, Ben and I went for a ski, had a look and made a little video. Enjoy.

Think happy thoughts everyone, snow is one the radar…

Now, it’s not a lot but after a spell of clear skies and sunshine following the snow in Verbier the other week, this is a refreshing change. And before you get too excited or too cynical, just remember some of our best seasons have been late starters – like last year, and God knows we got snow in the end…

We’ve also had loads of snow pre-season then nothing after Christmas. The weather is a very fickle beast. So our scientific recommendation is to cross your fingers and think happy thoughts. And start having extended conversations about the number of spiders, the berries on the trees and try to drop “100 year storm” into your Facebook status with authority. It worked for us last year…

…and it looked like this last year…
